Jamie’s works often refer to social justice issues, and creates unexpected visual combinations from non-traditional materials such as plexi-glass, rocks, tiling putty, doilies and found objects. The different layers and textures in her pieces force the viewer to make their way through each piece in a new and unexpected way. Several reoccurring subject matter can be recognized, such as the relation with popular culture/media, as well as environmental issues. Dufek manipulates and plays with the investigation of viewer’s expectations.
Every piece is an example of an idea followed spontaneously by another. Not only does Dufek create works through experimentation, she lives her life that way. Dufek was born in Pusan Korea, and raised in snowy Minnesota until a decision to relocate to warmer climate that would better harbor her imagination and creativity. The unknown that accompanies an impulsive move 2,000 miles away from home keeps her enthusiastic about the possibilities to come in this so-called life.
